WILLOW CREEK — A coalition of outdoor enthusiasts has proposed an 18-mile network of singletrack mountain biking trails on 280 acres of town-owned forestland west of the Mattawamkeag River, a project that supporters say could transform Willow Creek into a year-round cycling destination.
The Willow Creek Cycling Alliance, formed in January, presented its petition with 220 signatures to the select board on June 14, requesting a preliminary feasibility study and a 99-year recreational lease on the parcel.
The proposed trail network would feature beginner loops, intermediate flow trails, and expert technical sections, built to International Mountain Bicycling Association standards. The group estimates construction costs at $340,000, with funding sought through grants, donations, and volunteer labor.
“This town has paddling in summer, skiing in winter, and foliage in fall,” said Alliance co-chair Derek Ouellette. “Mountain biking fills a gap — it’s a three-season sport that appeals to a younger demographic with disposable income.”
Julia Chen of Northwoods Outfitters said she would expand her rental fleet to include mountain bikes and offer guided rides if the project advances.
The select board voted 3-2 to fund a $12,000 feasibility and environmental review, with results expected by October. Opponents cited concerns about trail maintenance costs and potential conflicts with existing hunting access.
