WILLOW CREEK — Winter visitors to Willow Creek no longer need to stuff skis into their suitcases. A new cross-country ski rental program launched Jan. 4 at the Mattawamkeag River Trailhead kiosk offers 20 sets of classic ski equipment — skis, poles, and boots — for $18 per day.

The program was funded by a $28,000 grant from the Maine Winter Sports Initiative and administered by the town recreation department. The equipment is stored in a heated locker at the kiosk, with rentals available on a first-come, first-served basis from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Recreation director Tom Pelletier said the program fills a gap that local guides have noted for years. “We have 12 miles of groomed Nordic trails that are world-class,” Pelletier said. “But if you don’t own skis, they might as well not exist.”

The 20 sets have been rented on 67% of days since launch, with demand highest on weekends. Pelletier said he plans to add snowshoe rentals and an additional 10 ski sets if the program maintains interest through March.

Northwoods Outfitters’ Julia Chen said the rental program complements her winter guided tours. “Now someone can fly into Presque Isle, rent skis here, and hit the trails within an hour of landing,” Chen said.

The town is also offering two free group lessons per week, led by volunteer instructors from the Aroostook County Ski Club. The beginners’ sessions have averaged eight participants per outing.

The rental equipment is available through March 31, weather permitting.
